“As long as we’re proud of it and as long as we love it, that’s all we could ever ask for,” Chloe Bailey says of the record she’s just released with her sister, Halle: a vibrant, sophisticated R&B project titled Ungodly Hour. It started with a moodboard, they say, of nude images (an allusion to baring their souls) and a phrase: “The trouble with angels”.
What those initial moments of creativity eventually transformed into is a body of work that repositions Chloe and Halle (or Chloe x Halle, as they’re known musically) as women rather than the girls they’ve long been referred to as. Starting out as young actors in the film industry, they got their big musical break posting Beyoncé covers online. She saw them, and signed the girls to her Parkwood Entertainment management company. From there, they’ve gone on to star in hit TV shows like Grown-ish, earn two Grammy nominations for their debut album The Kids Are All Right, and line up big future projects for 2021: Chloe, a hit thriller movie in the making called The Georgetown Project; for Halle, the hyped remake of The Little Mermaid, in which she’ll play the eponymous character herself.
But this transition into adulthood is aided greatly by Ungodly Hour: a sonic shedding of skin and inhibitions that shows us who they truly are. Executive produced by Beyonce (!!!!), it’s already spawned a hit in the form of “Do It”, a slick R&B bop that, honest to God, makes us ascend every time we hear it.
So how did these sisters make such musical magic, and what’re their plans for once all of this Corona BS blows over? Well, we jumped on Instagram for a new episode of NOTHING TO Hi-DE to get the low down. Check out that conversation below:
