Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant of LVMH Prize nominated label Coperni have been announced as the new artistic directors at iconic 60s fashion house Courrèges.
It might just be the perfect pairing, with Courrèges’ history of sci-fi fashion and Coperni’s minimal (but interesting) 60s shapes and affection for science (their brand name comes from Copernicus, the Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who realized that we orbit the sun.)
“They are incredibly talented. They have run their own firm, which means they consider both the creative and commercial aspect of what they do – the wearability of their clothes,” Jacques Bungert, co-owner and co-president of Courrèges, told WWD, adding that, “They are passionate about fabrics and fabrications, which is clear from their work and matters a lot to us, because at Courrèges, fabric is king.”
Despite the LVMH Prize nomination, Meyer and Vaillant will put Coperni on hold as they take on their joint role at Courrèges. They are the first artistic directors appointed at the fashion house since the company was sold by founders André and Coqueline Courrèges in 2011, though there has been a caretaker creative co-ordinator and manager, Lionel Giraud, who has worked on collaborative projects with Eastpak, Evian and Estée Lauder.
Sebastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant have said, “There is one fundamental in the work of André and Coqueline Courrèges that touches us in particular: youth. It gives us strength to believe that with Courrèges, anything is possible, even the most ambitious dreams”. The young (26 and 25) design duo will present their first Courrèges collection for spring/summer 2016 later this year.
