Before and during Burberry’s SS23 show earlier this week, rumours swirled that the collection — an ode to the British seaside — would be Riccardo Tisci’s final outing for the British heritage brand. Now, it has been confirmed that, after more than four years at the helm, he will indeed be stepping down from his chief creative officer role, and taking his place is Daniel Lee.

The Bradford born award-winning designer will be responsible for all Burberry collections from 3 October 2022, with his first show for the house taking place during the AW23 edition of London Fashion Week in February. Up until November 2021, Daniel had been creative director at Bottega Veneta and has been credited with reimagining the Italian fashion house’s traditional codes, and creating viral luxury pieces in that iconic green hue synonymous with what was quickly christened “New Bottega”. He was also previously the director of ready-to-wear at Céline and also worked at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière.

Over his time at Burberry, Riccardo Tisci gave the ever-so-British stalwart a more international appeal. He piqued the interest of global celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West (the latter travelling all the way to South London for Riccardo’s final show) as well as a new gen of fashion fans by re-inventing the iconic monogram, bringing in a streetier tone, ending the use of fur and the practice of burning unused stock. He also gave us those stunning ads of a shirtless horse-riding Adam Driver, and for that we will always be grateful.

“I am honoured to join Burberry as Chief Creative Officer,” Daniel said in a statement.  “Together with the team, we will write the exciting next chapter for this legendary British luxury brand, continuing its historic heritage and building on Riccardo’s legacy. I am very excited to be returning to London, a city that champions pioneering creativity and that continues to inspire me.” Here’s to what this new era of the 166 year old brand brings!
