We’ve been flipping our shit since David Lynch announced in October that he’d be resurrecting cult cable series Twin Peaks in 2016, 25 years after the series was abruptly cancelled back in 91. Last night, our dreams came crashing down like a tree on its way to the Packard Saw Mill when Lynch took to Facebook and Twitter to announce he’s leaving the project:

Dear Facebook Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.

Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost were slated to produce nine new episodes set to air on Showtime next year. Lynch’s plan was to bring the series into the present day, telling Variety “the passage of 25 years will be an important element in the plot.” He’d been working on assembling its original knockout cast, which famously includes longtime Lynch vet Kyle MacLachlan, a fresh-faced Heather Graham, and Lara Flynn Boyle, the only OG who did not appear in Lynch’s bizarre post-cancellation prequel film Fire Walk With Me.

As usual, mystery shrouds the sleepy Washington town as the series’ fate hangs in the balance. Will Showtime gun for Frost to shoulder the weight entirely? Will someone new be brought in to envision the world of Twin Peaks 25 years on? Or, as many are probably thinking, what’s the point without Lynch? We’ve reached out to Log Lady for some clarity, but her timber declined to comment.
