Surrealist filmmaker extraordinaire David Lynch has announced on Twitter than he will direct the upcoming third series of Twin Peaks, 25 years after the cult murder mystery was first shown. Lynch set Peaks Geeks’s hearts racing when he tweeted earlier this morning, “Dear Twitter Friends, the rumors are not what they seem ….. It is !!! Happening again. #TwinPeaks returns on @SHO_Network”.

When it was first announced that the much-loved cult show would be returning, David Lynch was on board to direct it, but he later tweeted that “After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.” Well, it seems those budgetary issues have been ironed out, as Showtime president David Nevins confirmed in an official statement on Friday, saying, “This damn fine cup of coffee from Mark [Frost] and David tastes more delicious than ever… Totally worth the extra brewing time and the cup is even bigger than we expected. David will direct the whole thing which will total more than the originally announced nine hours. Preproduction starts now!!”
In the original series, murder victim Laura Palmer appears to Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan, who will also return for the third series) in a dream. Speaking backwards, as is customary in the dream room, Laura tells him “I’ll see you again in 25 years”. Now, it looks like that wait is finally over.
