What we know about David Lynch’s new Netflix series

The arthouse king and streaming giant finally join forces.

Netflix have quickly become the dream makers of indie directors. They funded Alfonso Cuarón’s passion project, Roma, which led him to Oscar glory, and Charlie Kaufman’s first film in five years, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, earlier this year. Not to mention David Fincher’s new movie Mank, which will appear on the streaming service.

It was only a matter of time before the legendary David Lynch would get his moment too, and it looks like it’s arrived. An industry newsletter in LA, Production Weekly, has quietly announced the arrival of the Twin Peaks director’s new project, and its a miniseries called Wisteria. So what do we know about it? Well, here’s a quick rundown of all the details we have so far.

    He’s teased it before

Throughout his YouTube series, What’s David Up To?, the director would regularly appear from his office-slash-studio at home. He told us that he was actually quite enjoying the process of being in lockdown, despite not knowing when it would end. It was in one of these videos that he said he’d be working on a project had he not been locked up indoors. Could it be that Wisteria was meant to arrive a little earlier, and what we’re hearing now is the first sign of the show’s production kickoff, with the end of Ms Rona in sight?

    What’s the plot?

Now this is something we know nothing about, but that’s not peculiar considering Wisteria is a David Lynch project. He’s famously tight-lipped about what his movies and television shows entail, perhaps in an attempt to throw rabid fans off the scent and maintain a sense of surprise. Any guesses as to what it might be about? Our DMs are open.

He’ll be working with his long-time Twin Peaks producer

Those hoping for Wisteria to match the eerie peculiarities of Twin Peaks may be in luck: the only person confirmed to join David on the set of the show so far is his long-time producer companion, Sabrina S. Sutherland. Having first met on the set of Twin Peaks, where she was a production coordinator, the two have formed a long-term relationship that’s seen Sabrina oversee projects like David’s Inland Empire and the TV show’s 2017 reboot. Wisteria will be their next collaboration.

It’ll be shot in Los Angeles

The announcement of the show also told us where it will be shot: in Los Angeles, as is the case with much of David’s work. Though we imagine the exteriors may be shot elsewhere, the interiors of Wisteria will be shot at Calvert Studios in the city. It’s familiar ground for him, having shot the 2017 season of Twin Peaks in the same space.

    They’ve confirmed a shooting date

There may have been some tight-lipped plans to kick off shooting of the series earlier this year, but the official start date of the project’s shoot is May 2021, meaning we still have a few more months to go before we get even a sliver of behind the scenes gossip and an idea of who may be appearing in the cast’s line-up.

    So when’s it coming out?

It’s too early to tell when Wisteria will finally arrive on our scenes, though rest assured Netflix will be gearing up for a glitzy launch. TV shows take time, but they often start airing before the series has actually been finished. Therefore, if David gets a move on, don’t be surprised if the show arrives late next year. Maybe, considering David’s fanbase are huge lovers of the big-screen experience, there’ll be an opportunity to see Wisteria in cinemas too.
