Very little is known about the exact date that David Lynch’s feverishly anticipated, long-delayed Twin Peaks revival will finally arrive. Showtime has only hinted that the reboot will hit screens of some form in “early 2017.” But the latest clue about the return of the cult series is pretty exciting all on its own. Indiewire repots that another Lynchian masterpiece, 2001’s neo-noir mystery film Mulholland Drive, will be returning to UK theaters in a new 4K restoration supervised by the director himself. The theatrical release on April 14 will follow a premiere at the Birmingham’s Flatpack Film Festival and precede a new special edition DVD and EST release on May 1. Distribution company Studiocanal says that the DVD will coincide with the return of Twin Peaks.
Of course this is hardly the only thing that makes the theatrical restoration so thrilling. Earlier this year the BBC asked over 177 critics to rank what they considered the best films of the 21st century so far, and not many people were shocked to see Mulholland Drive clinch the coveted #1 spot — ahead of Spirited Away, Boyhood, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The Twin Peaks release peg isn’t totally random either — Mulholland Drive began during the development of Lynch’s cult TV show, and was somehow rejected by ABC before becoming a still mind-bending, Oscar-nominated feature film about an aspiring actress (Naomi Watts), an amnesiac woman (Laura Harring), and a series of surreal Hollywood vignettes. So far April is shaping up to be a good time for Peaks freaks.
