Netflix have dropped the trailer for their new apocalyptic sci-fi comedy Don’t Look Up starring all your faves! Led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as astrologers on a global media tour to warn the earth of an approaching comet on course to decimate life as we know it, the Adam McKay (Vice, The Big Short) movie also features Meryl Streep, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Jonah Hill, Chris Evans, Rob Morgan, Mathew Perry, Cate Blanchett and, of course, Timothée Chalamet.

As the trailer showcases the ever-hyperventilating Dr. Randall Mindy and the deadpan Dr. Kate Dibiasky, played by Leo and J-Law respectively, fighting increasing stagnant inaction in the face of world devastation, fittingly soundtracked to “Don’t Bring Me Down” by ELO, we also get to see Timothée and Ariana’s characters.

After playing a charismatic chess playing activist in The French Dispatch and gearing up in all-black body armour in Dune, Timothée’s black shaggy tresses, recently dyed red for his upcoming cannibal Luca Guadagnino movie, are here styled into a mullet under a backwards cap (we call that range) as he plays obnoxious teen Quentin, who is preoccupied sharing the catastrophic events online.

The r.e.m beauty CEO and The Voice coach Ariana Grande can then be seen playing the very on-brand role of Riley Bina, a pop star who loves a spiked accessory and a shooting star tattoo. In one moment she can be seen in a spacey dress performing on stage, perhaps saving the world by destroying the oncoming comet with one of Ari’s signature whistle tones.

Other stars in the film play many of the other apocalypse deniers who scarily don’t feel too far away from our own reality. Meryl Streep plays US President Janie Orlean, who judging by her son (played by Jonah Hill) being her Chief of Staff and her blasé attitude to an impending apocalypse, is perhaps somewhat Trump-inspired. Mathew Perry, Rob Morgan and Chris Evans then play other government officials. Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry are news anchors uninterested in the astrologers pleas for action, while Kid Cudi takes on the role of DJ Chello.

Don’t Look Up will have a limited theatrical release on 10 December 2021 before becoming available to stream widely on Netflix from 24 December 2021. Well, that’s if the apocalypse doesn’t happen first…
