Edward Meadham, the much-celebrated designer of the iconic but sadly now closed London label Meadham Kirchhoff, made a triumphant return to London Fashion Week yesterday, designing a small collection of clothes for accessories designer Sophia Webster’s darkly romantic presentation at the House of St Barnabas in Soho.
i-D fashion features director Anders Christian Madsen hailed the genius decision by Sophia Webster to work with Meadham on the garments, which were conceived to compliment her shoes and accessories, and inspired by the decayed depravity of Miss Havisham of Great Expectations and Lydia Deetz of Beetlejuice.
“People keep asking me, ‘What are you going do now?’ Oh, please fuck off,” Edward told Anders, explaining that, “I was really ill, then I was recovering, then I was lost, and now we’re here.” And we’re so glad he is; as Anders says, his appearance at Sophia Webster, “reminded guests how vital it is that we find a seasonal platform for Meadham so his incredible talent doesn’t go to waste. In an experimental fashion city fast becoming gentrified, London needs his twisted, brilliant mind more than ever.”
Though Edward did give i-D a hint about where he would like to go: “Obviously, I desperately want to do Schiaparelli and I think I can do it so well.” The romance, strange beauty and penchant for things not being quite as they seem in the codes of the recently revived house of Schiaparelli matched with Meadham’s signature twisted femininity would surely be the hottest new ticket in town.
