Emily Ratajkowski is not one to keep quiet when it comes to sexism. The model and actress stuck up the middle finger to patriarchy when she posed in a topless selfie on Kim Kardashian’s Instagram. She’s also spoken at a Bernie Sanders rally, and wrote for Lena Dunham’s Lenny newsletter. Continuing to share her feminist views, Ratajkowski has written a new essay for Glamour discussing sexist double standards and addressing how women get called out for attention seeking where as men are able to do as they please.
She opens the essay recalling the amount of trolling she received for speaking at the Sanders rally, including criticism that she had “an excess of beauty and lack of brain.” Ratajkowski wrote the onslaught of comments made her realize that she had “been called an attention whore so often that I had almost gotten used to it.”
She went on to make a key point of how women are kept in their place, observing that: “Our society tells women we can’t be, say, sexy and confident and opinionated about politics.” Em has proved that it’s definitely possible to be all three. Read the full essay here.
