It’s a little hard to keep track of what fashion season we’re currently in the midst of in Paris. Is it Couture? Cruise? Wait is it still Men’s? Resort? Or is that just the American name for Cruise? Spring/summer 19 ready-to-wear?
Over the last few days, Royal dresser Clare Waight Keller presented Givenchy’s latest couture collection, Jacquemus presented his first menswear collection and Demna Gvasalia presented Vetements’ spring/summer 19 ready-to-wear collection, dedicated to his native Georgia.
Over the weekend, Miuccia Prada presented Miu Miu’s resort 2018 collection, in Paris’s iconic Hôtel Regina. Opening the show was Rowan Blanchard, the young actress and activist whose previously taken a turn on the Opening Ceremony catwalk, followed by Adwoa Aboah, walker of many, many a catwalk. What followed was an eclectic and wonderful symposium of different actresses and models who embody the spirit and joy de vivre of Prada’s younger sister.
This included — but was by no means limited to — Adriana Lima, Naomi Campbell, Alexa Chung, Kaia Gerber, Alek Wek, Liya Kebede, Georgia May Jagger, Chloë Sevigny, Kate Bosworth, Adut Akech, Jaime King, Sadie Sink, Gwendoline Christie and, closing the epic show, Uma Thurman!
It was a multi-generational celebration of the women that wear the clothes and bring the brand to life. Hovering over the entire show was “the spirit of Joan of Arc” — who’s a “symbol of the transgressive woman” — Miu Miu said in a statement. The collection itself included all the classic little Miu Miu details — cat illustrations printed upon dresses, ruffles, pastel-coloured dresses, preppy cardigans, vintage eyewear and luggage, and fluffy slippers. There was acid-wash denims, long evening gowns, sheer trousers and throws. In effect, it had everything you could possibly need for a last-minute romantic getaway, to a fabulous foreign resort, no less.
