Singer/songwriter/producer/goddess Grimes is as captivating in front of the camera as she is behind the boards, whether it’s a professional studio camera or the recording function on her brother’s iPhone. Plenty of proof can be found in the surprise seven-video medley that Grimes and her equally talented BFF/burgeoning producer HANA just unleashed upon the internet. The videos were all shot “guerrilla style” over two weeks during Grimes’ AC!D REIGN European tour that kicked off in February in Berlin. “This summer I brought my brother Mac and my best friend Hana on tour and we shot a bunch of music videos,” Grimes wrote on Twitter today. “These 7 videos were shot over a 2 week period throughout Europe during The AC!D REIGN tour. They are guerrilla style vids, a la realiti. so there was no crew, makeup, cameras, lights. Just us and a phone, so maybe don’t expect anything too fancy. That being said, we’re really proud of what we made.”
The videos can either be watched together — as in the 38-minute director’s cut above — or as separate visuals for her and HANA’s tracks. Grimes says that while they initially intended only to film a video for “World Princess Part II,” they finished that so quickly that they decided to shoot six more, as you do. Those include Grimes’ otherworldly Art Angels tracks “Butterfly,” “Belly of the Beat,” and “SCREAM” featuring Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, plus “Underwater,” “Chimera,” and “Avalanche” from HANA’s own excellent self-titled EP.
