Just when we thought Jaden Smith had cemented his status as the master of proms — taking Mecca “Crystal Mec” Kalani, Willow’s BFF (and collaborator on her new track), to prom in the same Margiela-esque all white Batman suit he debuted at Kimye’s wedding — the elder Smith has outdone himself.
News surfaced this morning that the 16-year-old (still a youngster on the prom circuit) was the guest of Amandla Stenberg, who you might remember meeting an unfortunate end as Rue in The Hunger Games. Amandla stunned in some silver braids, channeling a very 2003 Beyoncé-meets-Kristen McMenamy look, but Jaden stole the show in a Rick Owens-ish knee-length skirt situation.
The free-spirited Smith has a proven penchant for going pants-less, first breaking the internet when he stepped out earlier this year in a Topshop sweater dress. The teen’s style swerve isn’t a gimmick, but comes at an important moment in menswear, with Hood by Air and Telfar showing dresses long and short on the NYFW runways last season. Jaden’s agender experimentation is about more just following in the footsteps of Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs or Kurt Cobain, it’s a big win for a generation set on dismantling the gender binary.
