Hi girls, how did you meet?
Karlie: Jour and I met during the autumn/winter 08 shows, first at Prada, then at Valentino and later on at a shoot for Topshop in London, which is when we really got talking.
Jourdan: We’re both really alike and as soon as we found out we shared the same birthday we knew it was meant to be!
You share the same birthday?!
K: Yes, I was born August 3rd 1992 and Jourdan was born August 3rd 1990. We’re birthday twins. I remember meeting Jourdan and thinking, ‘this girl is cool, and surprisingly normal. I need to stick around!’
What’s your favourite thing to do together?
K: We love to spend time with Riley, go out to eat, shop, talk, see a movie, stay in for a girls’ night… it doesn’t really matter what we do.
J: Sometimes we don’t see each other for months, which is hard. So when we get together we have a big girl talk over lunch/dinner or even in front of the telly eating popcorn in our PJs.
Do you have nicknames for each other?
K: Jour Jour and Kar. We’re too lazy to say each other’s full name!
J: When we’re together, people call us Jourlie.
Karlie, what’s the best thing about Jourdan?
Jour makes seriously kick-ass fried chicken. It’s life changing… And she’s the best friend anyone could ask for.
Jourdan, what’s the best thing about Karlie?
Karlie is such a beautiful person inside and out. She has this energy about her that is so strong and effective you can’t help but be happy in her company. I always turn to her if I need cheering up.
Tell us a something about each other we don’t know…
K: Miss Jourdan Dunn can drive a stick shift! I am still in shock about that.
J: Karlie is obsessed with her bum. She loves it.
What’s the best night out you’ve ever had?
K: You are asking two of the biggest homebodies in the whole world. We tend to have more ladies’ nights in. But one of my fave London trips was when Sessilee [Lopez] and I threw Jour her baby shower in November 2009.
J: I also loved it when we went to the Versace party in Milan with Abbey Lee. Abbey got locked in the toilets for an hour and we couldn’t get her out! I will never forget that.
Do you ever share clothes?
K: Jour has an amazing sense of style, not to mention a killer shoe collection. And being that we are both giants with size 40 feet I love stealing her shoes.
Karlie, a little birdie told us you love baking cakes. If i-D were coming for tea what would you bake us?
Definitely all my famous family recipes; Gram’s gingersnaps, aunt Nancy’s gooey butter cake, my Mom’s roll out sugar cookies… let me know when you’re gonna be in New York, it’s a date.
What are your beauty secrets?
K: Water, water, water… sleep, sleep, sleep.
J: I use Vaseline on my lips before I go to bed, so they’re nice and soft in the morning.
Who do you have a crush on?
J: A certain male model who will remain nameless, and J Cole.
Have you ever had any catwalk mishaps?
K: Too many to count. I fell off the Fendi runway one season… that was a real doozy.
J: I tripped in the Issa show once too.
What’s your favourite food?
K: Two-way tie between spinach and cookie dough.
J: I love Asian and Caribbean food and enjoy trying out new recipes and putting my own twist on them.
What’s your favourite way to kick back and relax?
K: A long hot bubble bath followed by twelve hours of glorious sleep.
J: Sitting in front of the TV watching 90210 and Glee with a glass of white Zinfandel?.
What makes you happy?
K: Being surrounded by the people I love.
J: My son and my food.
What’s the last book you read?
K: Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises.
J: Katie Price’s last novel, please don’t judge me!
What music do you listen to?
K: Just about everything.
J: I listen to R’n’B, Hip Hop, Bashment, funky house and Dubstep.
Where is the best place you’ve travelled to so far?
K: I enjoy travelling to exotic places but I also love travelling to smaller cities in America. There’s nothing like a road trip across the USA. Speaking of road trips Jour… You and I need to do one!
J: For a British Vogue story with Mario Testino we went to Zanzibar. It was such a humbling experience, seeing the village children running around happy as Larry with not much brought tears to my eyes.
What are your long-term dreams?
K: To go to medical school and start a big family of my own… I want five boys!
J: All I really want is to be happy and make sure my son has the best life ever. Between us… I’d love to collaborate on a jeans range too, one that is sexy and offers a pair of perfectly fitting jeans to suit everybody.
What advice would you give other young models starting out?
K: This fashion world is crazy… but, if you are lucky enough to find a true friend along the way, hold on to them tight and thank your lucky stars.
J: My advice is the advice Naomi [Campbell] gave me and that is to make sure you look after yourself, especially during fashion week. You need to pack as many snacks with you as possible for your energy levels or you’re gonna burn out. I’ve been known to turn up to a show with KFC! I don’t care. If I need to eat, I’m gonna eat.
What’s the best thing about being friends?
J: I’m not the tallest anymore! We’re more than friends, we’re family. Karlie’s the sister I never had. It’s hard finding someone you can be yourself around and trust with your life and Karlie’s that person.
K: I have found my best friend, sister and soul mate. I don’t know anyone else in the world so lucky.
