Lady Gaga, like the vast majority of New Yorkers everywhere except Staten Island, was very much hoping for a Hillary Clinton victory in last night’s historic presidential election. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, following a long and anxiety-ridden night that eventually saw Donald Trump named the 45th President of the United States, the Joanne singer made her way to Trump Tower to protest the results. Standing on a sanitation truck, she held up a sign that read “Love Trumps Hate,” a slogan that has been used by the Democratic party throughout this nightmarish election.
This isn’t the first time Gaga has forgone sleep to show her support for Clinton. At the presidential hopeful’s final midnight rally in North Carolina earlier in the week, she gave a performance preceded by a galvanizing speech to get the vote out. Shortly before last night’s protest, Gaga continued her optimistic message by tweeting a photo with Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson. “In a room full of hope, we will be heard,” she wrote. “Stand up for kindness, equality, and love.” When many people are feeling confused and scared by last night’s results, it’s a welcome message that love and hope do still exist in an America that will soon look very different.
