Cali-based duo VanJess were barely born in the 90s, let alone lived through it. Yet, the pair brilliantly invoke the sonic spirit of Brownstone, SWV and Total with their brand new hip-hop x R&B bop, Addicted. Produced by IAMNOBODI, the Soulection selector known for Little Simz’ striking Wings, this sultry new single that brings to mind peak J-Lo is perfect for a sweaty summer day. Set among steamy, rain-soaked scenes, the Johnny LeFlare directed (Macklemore, A$AP Twelvy) video sees the sisters sing about a love so good it’s “got me fiending for another hit”.
“There’s a high you feel when you’re so into a person. It’s an intense feeling where you can’t help but want more, the only negative is when you can’t have that person,” explains Ivana Nwokike, one half of portmanteau double act VanJess.
Raised between Nigeria and California, Ivana and her sister Jessica went a bit viral in 2013 with a series of covers, before striking streaming gold earlier this year with Easy — featuring the brilliant Brooklyn rapper Leikeli47 — and Through Enough, a collaboration with Goldlink which popped up on Issa Rae’s forward-thinking soundtrack for Insecure. New single Addictive is a further sign of what’s to come from the siblings, who are preparing to release their debut album later this year.“ Addictive represents the more R&B and hip-hop side of the album,” Jess says. “The melodies and arrangement actually embody our core sound, and when we created it the rest of the album sort of just came together. The title came from creating the song — we knew it had a really addictive melody,” Ivana laughs.
