It’s difficult to believe that Lorde was just 16 when she dropped her remarkably mature debut album, Pure Heroine, just over three years ago. Today, on her 20th birthday, the new New Yorker has posted a lengthy update to her Facebook page about her “colossal” nineteenth year — in which she moved to the city, had her heart broken and, of course, poured everything into her highly anticipated sophomore record, which she hints will drop very soon.
“Writing Pure Heroine was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies,” she writes, “and this record — well, this one is about what comes next.” Though she suggests that “the big day is not tomorrow, or even next month realistically,” she already has the title, album artwork, and live show planned out — right down to the tour merch details.
Sophomore records are a notorious hurdle for artists with impeccably strong debuts, and considering that David Bowie once referred to Lorde as “the future of music,” she certainly has her work cut out for her. Still, the “Tennis Courts” singer seems beyond ready for the challenge — she calls her new lyrics “the best I’ve written in my life.” Though details about the new album’s sound are sparse, Bleachers’s Jack Antonoff — who has worked with the likes of Taylor Swift, Sia, and Grimes — likely played a role in its conception, given that the two have spent a considerable amount of time in the studio together.
