Nicolas Ghesquière flew the fashion industry to California for resort.

Yee-haw, cowgirls from outer space! Nicolas Ghesquière presented his most recent Louis Vuitton collection, of retro, romantic rodeo-inspired womenswear, at the late actor Bob Hope’s spaceship-style house in Palm Springs last night. The show is the latest stop on the jet set fashion world tour that is the pre collection season (or ‘resort’, ‘cruise’, whatever else you fancy calling it) after Burberry in LA and Chanel in Seoul, with Dior in Nice, Valentino in Rome and Dolce & Gabbana in Portofino to come.

In the blue skies and spacey surroundings, a stellar cast of new faces walked, including i-D cover star Natalie Westling, afro hero Lineisy Montero and pink-haired cool girl Fernanda Ly. The presentation began with floaty silk chiffon dresses and skirts with chain motifs and subtle paisley patterns. Then there were quilted car coats in dreamy pastels — worn with box bags and embroidered black brogues — and cropped bomber jackets paired with flowing jumpsuits and chunky sandals.

Later in the collection, cut-out snakeskin long-sleeve tops mixed with lace-striped dresses, and leather and denim rodeo hot pants were paired with spacey suede bikers and rubberized sweat tops.

Inspired by the work of artist Urs Fischer, and David Bowie getting off with Catherine Deneuve in the shower in The Hunger, Ghesquière’s collection was both romantic and futuristic, with a location-appropriate wild west flavor.
