Mariah Carey could have leveraged any number of the chart-topping hits from her record-smashing discography for her new MAC Cosmetics collaboration. But she went with ‘All I Want’ — a riff on her biggest international hit and New Yorker-certified Christmas anthem, All I Want for Christmas is You. Carey’s frosty champagne-colored lipstick will hit stores in December, so you’re probably just rejoicing in what appears to be a well-timed collaboration. In fact, it is part of Mariah’s career-spanning master plan to become the undisputed queen of Christmas.
“Mariah is the over the top pop and beauty icon. Throughout the years we’ve all watched her with admiration and feel right now she is at her ultimate best. She exudes elegance, glamour, sophistication or sense of fun,”MAC Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director James Gager said in a statement. Anyone who’s ever seen the Honey video — in which the Elusive Chanteuse freedives out a mansion window into a pool and completes an outfit change before breaking the surface — knows these words be true. But for the past 20 years, Mariah has reserved her most over the top glamorous fun for anything and everything Christmas-related.
All I Want for Christmas is You has three music videos. Last holiday season, Mariah performed six Yuletide shows at New York’s Beacon theater — 75 minute sets composed entirely of carols delivered in her signature eight-octaves. This Christmas-residency was staged mere months after she dressed up as Santa Claus for Halloween. In November, she will release a children’s book based on the song. According to an Instagram snap posted yesterday, she has already switched her wardrobe to full apres-ski mode. Mariah Carey deserves this. Make no mistake, Christmas is her time to shine.
