For her latest contribution to Planned Parenthood, feminist artist and activist Marilyn Minter recruited none other than Miley Cyrus and Marc Jacobs to help raise money and awareness for women’s health rights. Minter announced yesterday at the annual Planned Parenthood luncheon in New York that she would be selling 50 prints of an original work featuring a fresh-faced Cyrus behind steamy, dripping glass for $5,500 each, available through Artsy. For supporters who can’t afford to drop a few thousand dollars on the print, Marc Jacobs will be releasing t-shirts with additional images from Minter and Cyrus’ private photoshoot for $50 each. Those will be made available on his site starting May 16.. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the women’s health organization.
Minter — a self-described “political junkie” who is now in her late 60s — told Artsy that she selected Cyrus partially because of her youth following, and mostly because she is a conscious LGBTQ activist who doesn’t care about making money. Furthermore, Cyrus is not afraid of offending people if it means her voice is heard, a quality Minter finds in fellow collaborator Marc Jacobs and in herself. Minter also notes that she has been working to raise money for Planned Parenthood for a few years now, and that she has seen the organization come under more fire in the past two years than in the past 20. The artist remembers herself being “just another marcher,” but says that she feels she has to step up now more than ever and use her own voice.President and CEO of Planned Parenthood in New York City, Joan Malin, said that the collaboration “shines a spotlight on the millions of women who are being negatively affected by this ongoing attack on abortion access” and expressed her gratitude to the artist and pop star.
