After what feels like years of rumours and teases, the fourth entry in the Matrix franchise, titled Matrix: Resurrections, is finally about to arrive. On 22 December, legit days before you pig out and sign off for Christmas, Keanu will be bolting back onto our screens as Neo, nearly two decades after we last saw him fill that character’s boots.
As the date draws closer, we’re being given more and more insight into the film’s moodboard, and how much it will look back and reference the Matrix movies of the past. Now, a new trailer is filled with motifs and imagery from the original three films, as the new film deals with déjà vu and the old codes being used in new, mysterious and ominous ways.
There’s also a new Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S game set to be released on 9 December, called The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience. Created by Epic Games and the franchise creator Lana Wachowski, players will be taken into a reality-bending universe using MetaHuman technology (incredibly realistic and uncannily lifelike digital humans) and will feature both Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss. Sounds trippy!
So with the film just around the corner, what else do you need to know about it? Read on to discover more about the cast, release date and watch the full length trailer.
Who’s in the cast of The Matrix 4?
Along with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity respectively, the new film will also star cult actor Christina Ricci, who last worked with Lana Wachowski on the 2008 candy-coloured action movie, Speed Racer. Who she will play has not yet been announced.
The movie also stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson, as well as newcomers played by Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, and — exhale — Ellen Hollman.
Does the Matrix 4 have a trailer?
Three months prior to the film’s release, fans were guided to WhatIsTheMatrix.com, inviting them to pick a glistening blue or red pill that unlocks one of 180,000 short teasers of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clips and darkly menacing narration from the characters. The first full trailer for the film, released in September to the interactive website, is filled with as much green code, chilling action sequences and time-bending reality as we’d hoped! Now, a new second trailer promises that the film will be incredibly referential of moments and ideas in the original films in the franchise, with a focus on déjà vu and remembering. The film will also seemingly focus on Neo and Trinity reuniting after their deaths in the third film.
Does the Matrix 4 have a release date?
With most movie release dates being pushed back after production was halted during the pandemic, Matrix Resurrections is one of the few titles being brought forward, from next April, to 22 December 2021. Ah, Keanu for Christmas. 😌
