Megan Fox is down for a Jennifer’s Body sequel, as she should be

The actress spoke on the cult horror film's initial dismissal and re-emergence as a camp classic.

Megan Fox is down to star in a sequel of TV spin-off to Jennifer’s Body, as is her deserved and God-given right.

The 2009 dark comedy-slasher starred an ascendant Megan as a demon-possessed cheerleader, alongside Amanda Seyfried as her put-upon best friend who has to stop her slaughtering the male population of their small town (again, deserved).

Initially dismissed and misunderstood upon its release – thanks, in large part to marketing for the film focusing on how “hot” its titular star was, despite the fact she was playing an actual soul-sucking succubus – the Karyn Kusama-directed flick has undergone a much-needed renaissance in the wake of its 10th anniversary in 2019 and even served as a large visual and narrative reference for Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U video this year.

It seems that in the interim, the newfound appreciation has not passed its former leading lady by. During an interview with the Washington Post, Megan admitted that Jennifer’s Body was “iconic” but suffered from a less than ideal critical reaction (she’s right and she should say it).

“This movie is art, but when it came out, nobody was saying that,’“ she said. “Critically, everybody shit on it.”

But the good news is that Megan is now more than ready to dust both Jennifer and her body off for another round.

“I don’t think it’s a hard movie to make a sequel to,” she quite rightly said. “I mean, they should make it into a TV series. That would be cool.”

It’s always interesting to hear Megan talk about Jennifer’s Body, considering how tightly constructed it seemed around her star persona at the time. Where the marketing and general criticism at the time saw her acting as just another hot girl, what’s become more clear in the ensuing years (especially if you view the film and Diablo Cody’s whip-smart script through a decidedly queer lens) is that Jennifer’s Body is actually a film about emancipation from a male-dominated society. Jennifer’s power as a succubus plays on her hotness, sure, but it’s mainly fuelled by her disenfranchisement from mainstream society.

The only way to escape? Get a girlfriend and kill the patriarchy. You go girl. So, yes, Jennifer’s Body equals good.

Now, 11 years after the film first debuted, Megan is giving the scream queen life another go, starring in Til Death from debut director S.K Dale, where she plays a woman handcuffed to her dead husband as part of a sick revenge plot.
