Confine me to a rug for four minutes and thirty-six seconds and I’d probably curl up in a ball and take a long nap, but Nina Kraviz isn’t like that. In the lo-fi new music video for her moody techno banger ‘Dream Machine’ — taken from Nina’s Stranno Stranno. Neobjatno EP, out now on her own трип records — the Russian producer and DJ spends the whole time dancing low and slow. Shot by Artem Nanushyan and choreographed by Oleg Glushkov, it’s all quite ‘Cat lady from A Clockwork Orange does yoga’, isn’t it? Only with more eye contact, less murder and much better music.
So what’s it all about? “It’s about dreaming,” Nina tells i-D. “We were preparing my Coachella show and ‘Dream Machine’ was a part of it. I was wondering how to perform this part and went to a really nice Russian choreographer and theatre director, Oleg Glushkov for advice. I asked him what he thought I should do, dancing wise, during my show and he said I should just do nothing, ‘Just close your eyes and let your body come up with all the moves.’” So she did exactly that: “Then I just put the song on really loud and asked my friend to film it.”

Nice! So besides ‘Dream Machine’, what else are you up to these days?
I am working on my second album. My label трип is turning five years old in December and I have so much great music to come out before the end of the year.
What’s exciting you most about music right now?
My personal feeling is that there has been nothing new happening in electronic music for many years. Everything that comes out as fresh is the result of intense recycling of already existing ideas; combining old with new and figuratively speaking putting everything that is there into production leaving no waste at all. It is quite apocalyptic and also gives you freedom to do whatever you want. It’s incredible actually. The whole musical heritage is there for you to create from. That’s really, really exciting.
