Across the USA, hundreds of thousands of protestors are out on the streets demanding change. In California, the response has been huge, with demonstrations stretching from its smallest rural towns all the way to Los Angeles’ biggest streets. Now in their sixth day of protest, Californians are defying the confusing curfew laws hastily introduced, sending a loud, unequivocal message to the government. According to photographer and artist Ian Markell, who has been joining the demonstrations in LA, protestors are marching and shouting the names of those wrongfully killed through megaphones. “With the threat of a heavily funded and militarised Los Angeles Police Force looming,“ Ian says, “the thousands of demonstrators — occupying one of the busiest areas in the city — questioned the inherent purpose of the LAPD and the racist police forces around the country that have led to generations of inhumanity.“
