There has long been a debate about people wielding mobile phones at gigs. Critics wonder what the point of this inevitably horrible quality footage is, and why fans can’t just live in the moment. Others think fans should be allowed to enjoy shows however they see fit. In the last few weeks, however, the Pokémon GO invasion has put a whole new spin on this digital age-old conundrum.
Over the weekend, an incensed fan posted footage of a fellow gig-goer playing Pokémon GO just meters from a gyrating Beyoncé at the Stade de France, North of Paris. In an unnecessarily gendered attack, the fan can be heard screaming “This bitch is finding Pokémon! She’s finding Pokémon when Beyoncé’s singing! Fucking Pokémon! Look at where she is! She’s next to the stage! This is the stage, and this bitch is finding Pokémon!”
Perhaps having seen the footage, Rihanna was taking no chances at her show, also in France, when she she made an announcement: “I don’t want to see you texting your boyfriends or your girlfriends. I don’t want to see you catching any Pokémons up in this bitch!” We’ve all seen the video for BBHMM, so consider yourself warned.
