Speaking to the Associated Press, Serena Williams has opened up about her part in one the year’sbiggest pop-culture events. “I have known the director since I was like nine years old [and] I know Beyoncé pretty well.” Director Kahlil Joseph and Serena were both born in Michigan, and she’s known Bey since way back in the Destiny’s Child days. When Queen Bey tore her hamstring in 2004, Serena connected her with primo medical care. As Bey told MTV at the time, “Kelly Rowland is friends with Serena Williams, and she hooked us up with her doctor and I’m doing very, very well.”
Fast forward to the present day, the pair are closer than ever. According to Serena, Bey felt the tennis champion was a perfect co-star during “Sorry.” “They were like, ‘we would love for you to be in this particular song. It’s about strength and it’s about courage and that’s what we see you as.'” Of course Serena obliged, though once she got to set, nerves hit.
Serena admits, “[Beyoncé] told me that she just wants me to dance, like just be really free and just dance like nobody’s looking and go all out. So that wasn’t easy in the beginning, but then it got easier.” In the end, it was as much fun for the pair to film “Sorry” as it is to watch. “I thought that particular song on the visual album was really a strong song, and it was also really fun at the same time,” Serena concluded.
