7 of Sienna Miller’s most iconic outfits

The it-girl was the face of 00s ‘boho-chic’ in low-rise skirts and the Balenciaga City bag.

It-girl, the progenitor of boho-chic, “Bella Hadid of the Bush years.” Call her what you will, but Sienna Miller will always be a bona fide fashion icon. While her 2004 engagement to Jude Law brought Sienna’s name to the headlines, it was her covetable, laid-back style that made her a pop culture phenomenon.

In the mid-00s, Sienna became the face of decade’s ubiquitous ‘boho chic’ style, with its low-rise peasant skirts, spangled gilets and beanies. As the decade progressed — and she portrayed Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl — Sienna moved on, taking on an edgier (albeit no less bohemian) look: opaque tights, fur coats and shift dresses, no doubt inherited from the Warhol star. Like Edie, Sienna belongs to a long lineage of it-girls; in fact, she was one of the 21st century’s very first. Here, we look back at the actress’ style legacy with a selection of seven of her most iconic outfits.

In 2004, Sienna Miller rose to mainstream prominence, becoming not just a tabloid staple but a bona fide it-girl for her effortless style. We’re talking distressed denim, cowboy boots, beanies and a colourful bra strap (or two) peeking out from beneath a cotton singlet. The tabloids named it boho-chic and one of the most ubiquitous trends of the 00s was born.

Here, Sienna’s wearing one of the most quintessentially boho-chic outfits of all time. Take notes: embroidered bolero, low-rise peasant skirt, flat sandals, navel-grazing necklaces and a Balenciaga moto bag, just to top it all off.

In 2006, Sienna began filming Edie Sedgwick biopic Factory Girl and, to fully embody the role, chopped her signature messy blonde mane into Edie’s hallmark pixie. The new ‘do made its red carpet debut at February’s Casanova premiere, along with an edgier new look for the actress. Gone were the low-rise skirts and cowboy boots that made Sienna a style icon. The star’s boho-chic look now had a downtown edge, characterized by vintage dresses, opaque tights and black ankle boots.

Remember when 100 denier tights were all the rage? Drawing inspiration from Factory Girl, no doubt, Sienna wore the opaque undergarment everywhere — including the Met Gala. The actress paired her tights with a 60s-inspired sequin minidress, similar to the one she would wear to the movie’s premiere in 2007.

What was boho-chic without the milkmaid braid? This rustic up-do became an it-girl go-to in the mid-00s for its just-rolled-out-of-bed look. Sienna wore the popular hairdo to the 2007 Golden Globes, pairing it with a gilded Grecian gown. Check out that unfinished hem! The epitome of effortlessness.

Along with opaque tights, the legging was a cornerstone of Sienna’s mid-00s wardrobe. Back in 2005, she wore them in pedal pusher lengths and paired them with her signature cotton calico boho dresses and ballet flats. Here, while filming Factory Girl in 2007, she wears an ankle length iteration with a glitzy dress and Edie-approved fur coat.

At the Factory Girl premiere party, Sienna went full Edie in this ultra-chic pants-less look. All sheer tights and not much else, the outfit was no doubt an homage to the iconic portrait of Edie en arabesque in her living room, shot by Enzo Sellerio for Vogue in 1965. An iconic look, passed down from one it-girl to another.
