Taken from Sunflower Bean’s second album, Twentytwo In Blue, due via Lucky Number on 23 March, Twentytwo rules. “Independent, that’s how you view yourself now that you’re 22,” the song opens, relatably. A celebration of resilience and pushing back against expectations, the accompanying video sees Julia, Nick and Jacob (all 22) get all dressed up with nowhere to go, ending up back home blissing out with friends under a blue light flecked with disco ball shimmers.
“I loved metaphorically speaking about the reality of being a woman, but letting that reality exist while tapping into the magical blues of Twentytwo in Blue,” says the director, i-D collaborator Olivia Bee. “This song showcases our strengths and individual beauties when we remove the masks that have been given to us by our society, and I wanted the video to reflect that.”
Love it? The Beans are touring Europe later this month, kicking things off with an album launch party at Rough Trade East on 23 March before hitting up Nottingham, Norwich, Birmingham, Newcastle and about a thousand other cities with support from London band Sorry. Then it’s back to the States for a tour that will take them right through to July, when they’ll be laying down for a while and trying to catch their breath. Worth it though.
