A is for Arsham and A-Trak: Director, artist, and architect Daniel Arsham will screen the fourth installment of his nine-part Future Relic film series on December 3 at the Edition Hotel. Following on from previous chapters featuring James Franco and costumes by Public School, Future Relic 04 stars Juliette Lewis and a talking owl. DJ A-Trak will spin the private after party.
B is for Beyond the Limelight: Prepare to party like it’s 1989, when Miami’s Museum of Fashion hosts Beyond the Limelight, photographer Tina Paul’s 80s and 90s-era snaps of nocturnal New York. Curated by Keni Valenti, Paul’s photographs will be displayed alongside garments inspired by the looks captured in her photographs — including designs by Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, and more.
C is for Chloe Wise: The 24-year-old Canadian art angel’s Norwegian black metal-themed video piece BEHIND screened yesterday as part of a group show Spirit Your Mind, and Wise has a busy week ahead of her. She’s joining Dan Colen and Katherine Bernhardt as a part of Artsy’s programming series at the Nautilus Hotel. Plus, catch her collaborative film with Claire Christerson, Greece, screening on December 4 outside the Art Basel Convention Center.
D is for Dimensions: Last year, Ryan McNamara interpreted the internet through dance at ME3M 4 MIAMI: A Story Ballet About the Internet — one of the week’s most lauded performance pieces. This year, the artist returns to ABMB with a little help from Dev Hynes. The pair will present Dimensions, an “immersive presentation that blends dance, music, and sculpture,” according to the Perez Art Museum Miami — the space hosting the exciting collaboration on December 3.
E is for Elliphant: One of our favorite Scandi singers will perform at an event benefitting nonprofit organization Water For People on December 3 at the Delano Hotel in South Beach. Before the show, press rewind on Elliphant’s i-D-produced video for Purple Light.
F is for Fashion: Fendi celebrates the opening of a new outpost in Miami’s design district with a DJ sesh from Solange while its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, is the subject of a mini retrospective at the Villa Casa Casuarina. Loewe will open a group show titled Close Encounters at its design district store, while Louis Vuitton will present a collection of foldable furniture at it new home nearby. And, of course, our longtime pal Jeremy Scott is set to throw another one of his famously fun arty parties at The Hall Hotel’s Surf Lodge. Will it outdo last year’s Barbie Dream House fete? We’ll see…
G is for Gnarly: Be sure to check out the MoMA design store’s Skateroom, a collaborative pop up shop with the Andy Warhol Foundation that sees limited edition skate decks featuring a few of Warhol’s most iconic prints.
H is for Half & Harper’s: Bill Powers’ Half Gallery and Harper’s Books returns to the Edition Hotel’s pop-up gallery with sculptures from Tom Sachs, new works from Aurel Schmidt, new pieces by Richard Prince, and much more.
I is for Ice Cream: Beat the heat with one of artist Spencer Finch’s free ice cream cones inspired by a Central Park sunset.
J is for Jen Stark: Fresh off the release of Miley Cyrus’ trippy-hippy new video for Lighter, artist Jen Stark will be in town to celebrate the launch of her Nakid Magazine cover. Hers might even be the first art you see, as she’s got an installation at the Miami International Airport, too.
K is for King of Arms: Tonight, Newsome is back with a serious bang: adapting 2013’s King of Arms — a cross-cultural parade originally staged in New Orleans — for a new procession through Miami’s Design District. The parade will include sportbike stunters, a full marching band, a voguing crew, and “a troop of locals who share Newsome’s reverence for custom car culture.”
L is for Lenny Kravitz: After chatting to i-D upon the release of his photobook FLASH, the rock god will exhibit a series of his black and white pap snaps in a public Design District exhibition.
M is for Mister Lee’s Shangri-La: Lisa Solberg (the internet’s resident psychic) will preview a new project — an “immersive exotic dance club sheltered inside an exotic greenhouse” according to a press release — on December 5. Solberg plans to pack the space with lush plant life and pink neon lights, the perfect setting for its choreographed performances.
N is for No Man’s Land: The Rubell family holds one of the largest collections of contemporary art in North America. But for the institution’s next major exhibition, it’s — as Kathleen Hanna once said — girls to the front. No Man’s Land culls over 100 female artists across mediums and generations, from Yayoi Kusama to Collier Schorr.
O is for Open House: The team of young NYC creatives behind Auto Body — an art exhibition space born of an abandoned garage on Long Island — will trade Bellport for Basel and stage a 40-artist group show in Miami on December 4. Though mediums widely range, each artist was given the same instruction: their piece must fit in a carry on bag. The show will take place at Sunset Drive Gallery, which is actually the garden of a friend’s house on Sunset Drive.
P is for Pony party: The sneaker brand teams with Zieher Smith & Horton Gallery to celebrate 20 years of Martha Colburn’s films by staging an installation at Miami’s Foxhole bar. Following the screening, artist Andrew Kuo (otherwise known as funny animal chronicler @earlboykins on Instagram) will hit the DJ decks for a raging after party.
Q is for [BB]Q: Kick back at art collective Creative Time’s annual Lazy Sunday BBQ, held this year at the Standard Spa.
R is for RIP: Petra Collins and Madelyne Beckles will curate Fuckboi Funeral, “a celebration of the end of minimalist, objective forms of art production,” as Petra explained via email. The group show will feature tapestry, pottery objects, and a performance by Alexandra Marzella and Beckles. Bid farewell to art world fuckbois at the Standard Hotel on December 2nd.
S is for Selfies: Kate Durbin presents the fourth iteration of her crazy kawaii performance piece Hello, Selfie! this afternoon at the Pulse Fair. Durbin and her crew of female performers clad in blonde wigs and red bows will take selfies for an hour straight, uploading them to a Facebook live feed.
T is for Talks: Jenny Holzer is widely known for her written word pieces, but come December 3, the legendary artist will sit in conversation with Trevor Paglen to discuss communication conditions for the main fair’s Conversations series. The following day, author Bret Easton Ellis will explore the evolution of LA’s art scene with artist Alex Israel.
U is for Unrealism: Two of contemporary art’s most esteemed titans, gallerists Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, shocked the art world when they announced they’d be pairing up to present Unrealism, a joint exhibit of figurative painting from the ’80s and ’90s, at the Design District’s Moore Building.
V is for Visionaire: For the first time in the highly coveted art and fashion publication’s 23 year history, Visionaire will be released as a series of large scale posters given away in three different cities for FREE! 36 artists including Matthew Stone and Miley Cyrus were commissioned to create their vision for the public in poster form, and 12 different posters will be distributed at public art events in Miami, LA, and NYC. W is for Wyclef Jean: The former Fugee will perform a super rare hour-long live set following Surface Magazine‘s invite only dinner party at the PAMM.
X is for Jamie XX: The XX producer will join forces with Four Tet for a joint performance on December 4 in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. We know there’s gonna be good times!
Y is for Yellin: The Pioneer Works founding artist will be the toast of Tumblr’s annual brunch at The Standard on December 4. Check Yellin’s’ work later in the week when producer and art collector Swizz Beatz links up with Bacardi to present the No Commission Art Fair, which will also see work from KAWS and Mickalene Thomas.
Z is for Zines: Artists Marilyn Rondon and Steve Yacar are teaming up to present the Dirty Bind Zine Shop in Wynwood — which features Xerox creations from Maia Ruth Lee, Peter Sutherland, Cali Thornhill Dewitt, and many more.
