A precious, precious gift arrived at the i-D office in New York yesterday.
Selfish, by Kim Kardashian West, touched down (a week ahead of its May 5 launch date) in a surprisingly small padded envelope. It measures a chic 5×7 inches — a lil wink, perhaps, to the standard size of a photographic print — and contains 445 pages printed with images of little-known Calabasas, California resident Kimberly “Kim” Kardashian West. If you look at the pages side-on there is a thick black section two-thirds of the way through. This marks a sexy interlude in which Kim shows her support for the #freethenipple movement with help from a range of different bathroom mirrors. The real highlights, though, are Kim’s adorable first-ever chubby-cheeked selfie with Khloé (the disposable camera days), her early snaps with Paris (the Blackberry years), cute appearances by celebrity friends including J. Lo, Karl Lagerfeld, Madonna and Olivier Rousteing, and cameos from Kanye and Kim’s own tiny selfie protégé, baby North West.
It is a masterpiece of visual storytelling. A little glossy nugget of 2015ness.
