Theresa’s story originally appeared in Up + Rising, a celebration of extraordinary Black voices, and is the first chapter of i-D’s 40th anniversary issue (1980-2020).

i-D chronicled over 100 activists and artists, musicians and writers, photographers and creatives, in Atlanta, Baltimore, Minneapolis, LA, London, New York, Paris and Toronto.

I’ve been going back and forth attempting to settle on a thought for this time and I constantly kept going back to a title I made in 2018 for a painting: Your Mother is a Woman That Moves Swiftly. Her Daughter Has to Keep Moving. The Beast is Behind me and Another is Always Approaching.
