Vic Mensa released a video for blazing, confrontational single U Mad last night, featuring pop culture titan and fellow Chi-town native Kanye West. The clip, directed by Grant Singer, who’s recently made promos for Ariel Pink and The Weeknd, is a triumphant tri-color expression of inner demons and religious imagery, including a timely comment on police brutality and gang culture.
Mensa opens the video as a stark red silhouette in front of a black background, bright white sparks flying at the artist from either side, an extension of Kanye’s recent awards performances, the luxurious red velour carpet echoing West’s clothing range with Adidas Originals. Kanye steps out of the dark for his verse in signature black Donda outfit, instantly recreating his run-ins with the media by throwing the camera out of shot.
