Actor and U.N. women global goodwill ambassador Emma Watson has released a new short film on gender equality with non-profit organisation, Global Goals. Following on from her powerful speech on campus sexual assault last week, Emma reminds listeners that despite a lot of good work being done around the globe, we still have a long way to go when it comes to achieving global gender equality.

Aptly titled Hurdles, the two-minute film features footage of female athletes from Tokyo’s 1964 Olympics as they compete in the 80m hurdles final. “Women and girls have always faced hurdles. But that’s never stopped us,” Watson narrates. The film goes on to highlight some of the achievements women have fought for throughout history, such as New Zealand giving women voting rights in 1893.

As the athletes glide over the obstacles — marked with statistics relating to child brides, education and violence — the Sia soundtrack swells and she concludes that while the race is still on, we will cross the finish line.
