New York-based brand Gypsy Sport releases a new video directed by ALKO.NYC that features raver, ragamuffin, hippy and afrofuturist-influenced looks from their fall/winter 15 collection. The young brand, who scooped the emerging designer menswear award at this year’s CFDAs, premieres Haturn+Grid World (Haturn is the name of the Gypsy Sport’s logo of two baseball caps forming a single planet and Grid World is a reference to old Macintosh screen savers), which features “urban athletics and hallucinogenics” as models Alain, Aube, Omar and Seashell dance to Alice Coltrane jazz and show off their sporting skills.
“During castings I like to ask models if they want to show off any athletic hobbies or talents,” says Gypsy Sport’s creative director Rio Uribe. “Lots of them do: dancing, swimming, running and martial arts. There’s a level of confidence that comes through with those skills. You know that feeling when you get to ‘flex’ in front of an audience? That’s what I wanted to capture.” The brand is also a big promoter of a range of models that represent the New York they inhabit. “Casting for diversity was important because I want Gypsy Sport to speak to all kinds of people.
