For her first showing with NEWGEN Molly Goddard’s street-cast gals graduated from high school and instead of heading to their year 11 prom, they were sneaking in from their debutante ball as if they hadn’t stayed up all night smoking cigarettes and kissing boys. Her tiered, tulle ballgowns were just as frothy and beautiful as before but this time instead of popping magenta, they evoked a feeling of old-school college nostalgia in muted pinks, greys, black and mustard yellow. Staged amongst easels, a table of paintbrushes, chalks and oils and a nude life drawing model, Molly got her autumn/winter 15 presentation down to a fine art.

Where did the idea come from?
The idea came from Bohemian art kids maybe, art students who have been up all night and woke up the next morning.
Interesting color palette…
I suppose it’s quite old-fashioned, a bit off.
How do you see this as a progression from your last collection?
I think it’s a bit more grown up. I like to think, before they were prom kids and now they’re college kids.
Key buzz words?
Frills and taffeta and ballgowns.
