Despite enlightening lessons from the likes of Zendaya and Amandla Stenberg, white people tend to remain either completely clueless or far too curious about black hairstyles. Just this week a biracial Zara worker was reprimanded for looking “unprofessional” after she wore her hair in braids. And while you’d expect TMZ to remember the inundation of headlines about Guiliana Rancic mocking Zendaya’s dreadlocks at the 2015 Academy Awards — considering they probably wrote most of them — it appears this is not the case.
In a recent video posted by the television platform, one guy follows Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd) out of the airport to cross-examine him on his hair: “What’s your hair care regime?” When Tesfaye responds, “I’m black,” the guy keeps pushing. “How often do you wash your hair?” Tesfaye says he washes it “every day.” When everyone back in the office responds with the same level of astonished glee normally reserved for celebrities who throw punches at the camera — one man very confidently asserting that you cannot wash dreads every day — one of their co-workers finally cuts in. “Shut up, stupid white people,” he says. “You wash your dreads every day because it already locks, and you can wash it as much as you want to.”
Everyone laughs, but the guy is clearly irritated. Wonder what the chances are they’d ask the same question to Justin Bieber?
