See… Daniel Lee’s first campaign for Burberry

Ever since the news came out that British designer Daniel Lee would be taking over from Riccardo Tisci as Burberry’s new chief creative officer, we have been dying to know what the future of the storied British fashion house would look like under his vision. Now, we have our first glimpse, courtesy of a new campaign ahead of Daniel’s debut at London Fashion Week next week. Lensed by Tyrone Lebon at Trafalgar Square and Chelsea’s Albert Bridge, the campaign stars hyperpop queen Shygirl, rappers Skepta and John Glacier, footballer Raheem Stirling, models Lennon Gallagher and Liberty Ross, actor Jun Ji-hyun and the legendary actor Vanessa Redgrave, all in the house’s new codes, traditional trench coats and a lot of roses.

There’s also the reveal of a refreshed logo for Burberry, inspired by an image of a knight on a horse charging ahead that was drawn for the brand in 1901 as part of a public competition. In the flag carried by the knight is the latin word “prorsum”, meaning “forwards” — a signal, perhaps, to the exciting new landscape Burberry will take going into Daniel’s debut collection for the house this London Fashion Week.

    the tokyo edition toranomon

Go to… The Tokyo Edition, Toranomon

Situated a stone’s throw from the city’s boutique-stacked and business districts, The Edition Toranomon in Tokyo is a palatial, plant-filled new oasis. Designed by legendary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the hotel opened in late 2020 but has only recently experienced its first wave of international visitors, following the re-opening of Japan’s borders in October 2022. Put the destination, and this space, on the top of your go-to list: the Toranomon Edition (which will be accompanied by another in nearby Ginza later in 2023) stretches into the upper floors of the World Gate building, meaning when you reach your room, 30-something floors above ground level, you’ll have a birds eye view over the city, with several rooms and suites looking directly onto the Tokyo Tower. Some of the suites even come equipped with private terraces with that iconic view.

Despite being in the middle of one of the world’s biggest metropolises, the whole experience feels deeply serene. Even the lobbies, hubbubs of activity with attached restaurants and bars with high ceilings, feel grandiose in design, but soft in atmosphere. All rooms are equipped with black tea-scented Le Labo soaps and bath salts, a scent that gently touches every corner of the space. If you have time (and if you don’t, make it), head to the spa too: you’ll have the rare experience of reaching a new state of tranquility, courtesy of one of the hotel’s highly skilled massage therapists, as you look out across the skyscrapers of the city. ROOT Restaurant, Berlin

When we were at Berlin Fashion Week last month, it seemed like everyone who’s anyone was hanging out at the newly-opened Hotel Telegraphenamt. Located in the city’s old telegraph office by Mitte’s Museum Island, the hotel and members club hosted a giant party that saw fashionable visitors first fuel up at their on-site restaurant, Root. Refreshingly, their menu of locally-sourced, high-quality dishes follows a fun premise: “Cooking is culture and culture is a life story,” says restaurant boss Roland Mary. “The experiences of each employee, as well as their own story, enters into what we do.” One worth visiting when you’re next in town, if only to obsess over the bespoke light fixtures — a playful collaboration with a local artist. Snag… Bowers & Wilkins seriously smart headphones

Is there anything worse than having to use the flimsy headphones provided on planes? Deciding there probably isn’t, Bowers & Wilkins have just released an in-ear, noise-cancelling headphone design — the Pi7 S2 — capable of connecting to in-flight entertainment systems wirelessly via a smart charging case. A game changer. With industry-leading sound quality, the model and its sister design, Pi5 S2, boast a bluetooth range of up to 25 metres and come in some very aesthetic new colourways. astro #1 zine cover by tom ivin

    Astro #1

i-D alumni Tom Ivin has unveiled his new zine, titled Astro #1. In it, the photographer-director asked a group of London youth to pick out their favourite pieces from their wardrobe and pose for his camera. The results are a vibrant look at contemporary Britain, and the kids who will eventually come to shape it. Buy it from MagCulture here. DG

    lips isamaya lip stick

    LIPS by ISAMAYA

If there’s one thing everyone is always saying it’s that there’s not enough dick-shaped lipsticks out there. Luckily, ISAMAYA is here to help us with that. The cult beauty line from Isamaya Ffrench has today launched LIPS, a phallic, avant-garde lipstick signature in shades Midnight Trance (a black glossy glaze) and Cardinal (a very Vatican-chic red). Even better than the packaging, they’re vegan and cruelty free. Check them out on i-D’s TikTok and pick up your own dick lippy here. RL

    Watch… Blue Jean

This BAFTA-nominated drama takes us back to Thatcher-era Britain, during which the implementation of Section 8 suppressed expressions of queerness in school settings. Jean is gay; a PE teacher whose passion for netball has enthused her class. But her sapphic side has been picked up on by one of her new students, a girl named Lois, who’s also reckoning with her sexuality in a space that disavows it. But this is not a love story: instead it’s an entangling, smart, effortlessly brilliant story of what it means to understand parts of yourself that people seem passionate to disavow. Blue Jean is an exemplary British debut. It’s in UK cinemas from Friday 10 February, following previews this week. More information can be found here. DG

    the critic's daughter book cover

    Read… The Critic’s Daughter

Priscilla Gillman was read bedtime stories by Toni Morrison. That was just one part of her strange and privileged upbringing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the daughter of a famous literary agent Lynn Nesbit and the drama critic Richard Gillman. But when her parent’s marriage fell apart, the view of her father as an unwaveringly strong and sensitive figure changed, and she has spent much of her life since then making sense of it. Her memoir, The Critic’s Daughter, is her attempt to formalise those thoughts. You can buy the book here. DG

    Listen to… Emma Bradley

We first insisted you listen to Londoner Emma Bradley back in Fall 2021, when she had just released her heartbreak-heavy debut EP. Luckily for everyone, she’s still at it! Now 23, her new EP, Grow or Die, tackles the tough times that forced her to work on herself. “Writing this music was therapy for me,” she says. “The songs are about trauma growing up, an abusive relationship, getting my heart broken for the first time, queerness… All of these things forced me to grow into the person I am now, but at the time I felt like I was dying.” A brilliant songwriter, Emma’s lyrics are vulnerable and her vocals ready to hurt your heart. Listen to Grow or Die and follow Emma here. FD
