Marc Jacobs continues his tradition of honoring his favorite people in this fall/winter 16 campaign. We already knew the musician, artist, writer, and Throbbing Gristle member Genesis P-Orridge would be involved thanks to some BTS photographs. Now the campaign has been unveiled and the designer has elaborated on his feelings for Genesis, praising them as they “continues to explore, shape shift, and define what it means to give love, be loved, and live love.”
Genesis’ campaign co-star is Carrie White, aka Sissy Spacek. Apparently Marc has been enamored with the actress since he was a teenager. Missy Elliott also features, although she’s been part of the Marc Jacobs team longer than she probably realizes. “Missy’s music has kept me and my design team happily energized through countless weekdays, weeknights, and weekends during those long hours of sketching, fitting, styling, and doing looks,” the designer reflected.
John Tuite and Carlos Santolalla — the first gay couple to sign to a modeling agency — appear wearing the brand’s women’s collection. Their image references New York legends Lou Reed and Robert Mapplethorpe. Former i-D covergirls Binx Walton, Julia Nobis, and Grace Bol make an appearance alongside models Cheyenne Keuben, Riley Montana, Flo Dron, Sarah Abney, Ally Ertel, and Estella Boersma. Marc wrote that he felt they all “effortlessly breathe a unique quality of life into the clothes.”
To Marc, the individuals in the David Sims-lensed campaign “represent a collective embodiment of love, honesty, integrity, courage, strength, curiosity and inspiration. Together, as one story, this collection is a reminder to question and challenge normal and to continue exploring and pushing boundaries.” His words, and the inclusive, celebratory images no doubt feel especially powerful and valued this week.
