After what feels like years of speculation, months of tantalisingly drip-fed information and a brand-spanking new cast, we finally have a first look at the Gossip Girl reboot ahead of its launch on HBO Max later this summer. This morning the show released its first full length trailer, which is just as mysterious, campy and ridiculous as it was in the noughties.
There are plenty of callbacks to the original GG in the new trailer, which follows the uber-rich, uber-privileged and uber-chic teens of Constance Billard and St. Jude’s, as they embark on wild adventures before getting up for class at nine the next morning. We open on the iconic Met steps, where a group of the Upper East Side’s ruling teens have gathered to welcome the school’s new girl into their fabulous world.
The perky but sinister narrator is there too, provided by the disembodied voice of Kristen Bell, who voiced the omniscient Gossip Girl in the show’s original run too. “Did you miss me?” she asks, as the trailer pans over the Manhattan skyline. “I know I’ve missed you.”
But even with plenty of callbacks, the defining feature of the new Gossip Girl is its promise to bring the show into the modern world. Set 10 years after the cast — Serena, Blair, Nate, Chuck, Vanessa, Dan, Jenny and most importantly, Dorota — ruled two of the five boroughs, the new Gossip Girl transforms the original blog to an anonymous Instagram account, which spies on the students and budding influencers and exposes more secrets than 2007 could have ever imagined.
Although we’re calling it a reboot, it’s technically not. In fact, the new and improved Gossip Girl is a continuation of the original story we left off in 2012, just a little more adult (thanks, HBO!) and reflective of how social media and the landscape of the city has changed in the interim decade.
Excited? Us too. But unfortunately, we still have a little longer to wait to see the sexy, rich teens — played by an all-starlet cast of Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith — frolic around New York. The series is set to debut on 8 July. Until then, check out the full trailer below.
