Over the weekend, every borough of New York City saw protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd at the hands of the police in Minneapolis, which occurred only one month after Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed in his own neighborhood, and of course, follows the unjust deaths of Breonna Taylor, Alton Sterling, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and countless other unarmed black people in America. Thousands demonstrated in the East Village, Times Square and Harlem, Flatbush in Brooklyn, and Jackson Heights in Queens, as well as the Bronx and Staten Island. These were just a few of the many protests against police brutality and racial injustice that occurred from Los Angeles to Atlanta, which have resulted in further police violence and curfews in many cities. Officers have used tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray on protestors, and here in New York, a cop car drove into crowds of people in Brooklyn — now, days later, the city either seems to have descended into chaos, or be business as usual, depending on the view from your window.
