Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival
Now in its 11th year, the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival immerses its audience in the entire culture of hip hop, well beyond the music. This year, you can catch events like the Hip Hop Institute Conference for a more academic take on the genre, or the Dummy Clap Film Festival, which will be screening Sacha Jenkins’s anticipated fashion documentary, Fresh Dressed. The festivities close out on Saturday with the music itself, featuring performances from the likes of Common, Mobb Deep and i-D faves Lion Babe.

The Rise of Sneaker Culture
Between Killer Heels and Jean Paul Gaultier, The Brooklyn Museum has built itself quite the reputation for thoughtfully curated exhibits on fashion and the cultural tie-ins to how we dress. So its latest show, The Rise of Sneaker Culture, is anticipated by everyone from sneaker freaks to casual style fans. With 150 pairs of kicks on view, the exhibit follows a history from nineteenth-century work shoes to the sneaker’s status as urban staple–and often high-end hot commodity–today, as well as its role in hip hop and other subcultures.

Matthew Barney: The CREMASTER Cycle
Busby Berkeley, Leni Riefenstahl’s propaganda, zombie films, Westerns and operas: they all get woven into the mix of artist Matthew Barney’s CREMASTER Cycle. The five acclaimed films, produced and released out of order, tell the story of the male reproductive process through the lens of artistic, emotional and cultural themes. On Saturday, the Guggenheim offers the very rare chance to follow the entire journey, by screening all five films in the order they were intended to be seen.
