Earlier this year, Andreja Pejić made history as the first transwoman to land a commercial campaign for a major beauty brand, following on from fellow trans trailblazer Lea T’s Redken haircare endorsement. Last month, we got our first glimpse of the Croatian-born stunner’s Make Up Forever debut when the brand teased Be Bold. Be Unexpected. Be You on Instagram. Today, the cosmetics campaign is revealed.
The Make Up Forever ad spotlights diversity and the power of transformation, and not just by shifting Andreja’s looks from glitter bomb eyes to classic red lips in seconds. “It means pushing boundaries in a positive way,” the 23-year-old Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs vet said of her involvement in the beauty brand’s inclusionary initiative. “It’s a project that really promotes transformation, promotes individuality,” pro artist Mélanie Inglessis added.
Pejić is joined by Korean American actress Jamie J Chung, whose role marks another positive step towards increased Asian American representation in the global beauty industry. Back in March, Soo Joo Park (an i-D fave also of Korean descent) spoke meaningfully about the impact of globalization on diversity in industries like beauty and fashion.
Yesterday, Pejić announced that she plans to follow in Caitlyn Jenner’s footsteps by releasing a documentary depicting her transition. We’re excited to not only join Andreja on her journey, but also to see what else she and Make Up Forever have in store.
