In a red glitter off-the-shoulder Dolce and Gabbana dress, with her hair in ringlets and gloss slicked over her infamous pout, Chloe Cherry was pure Hollywood bombshell on Emmys night. “I was channelling Jessica Rabbit,” the 25-year-old told us the morning after the awards ceremony. “It really made me feel like a sex icon honestly.” With Euphoria – in which Chloe quickly became a Season 2 fan favourite with her portrayal of heroin addict Faye – up for a huge 16 nominations, Monday was a big night for the cast and crew, with Zendaya making headlines and history as the youngest two-time winner of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Ahead of the event, we sent photographer Miriam Marlene over to Chloe’s place in Los Angeles to capture her getting ready for HBO’s very own Emmys party, with the help of her stylist Tabitha Sanchez, hair stylist Glenn Ellis and makeup artist Alex French — the latter who who dabbled in rhinestone usage and went heavy on Chloe’s “favourite lip product of all time: Urban Decay’s Lip Bond in the colour Unbreakable”.
Catching up the next day, the rising star filled us in on what went down at the party, how it felt to be cast in Eddie Huang’s Tuna Melt alongside SZA, and why the hell she’s listening to Skrillex right now.
Hi Chloe! Did you meet anyone fun at the HBO party?
I was really hoping to meet Larry David, but I ended up being too nervous to go up to him. I did see him though, which was really cool. I linked up with the other cast members and crew and everybody involved in Euphoria; I mostly hung out with Maude and Austin… Marcell [Rév, the show’s cinematographer] was there too. It was all very cool.
What are the key qualities of an awesome party, in your eyes?
Good friends, good music, good food, good lighting and no drugs or alcohol. Like, definitely no drugs.
And what about your own parties? Are you a good host?
No, I’m a really bad host. The only party I’ve ever hosted was accidentally… it was a surprise party.
What’s on your getting ready playlist right now?
I recently got back into Skrillex, and it’s been really cool. It’s been dope. It hypes you up like nothing else can. I usually just listen to rap music but this Skrillex shit, it’s really doing something to me.
When do you feel most confident?
When a fan approaches me and genuinely says something very kind to me and I can see it in their eyes that they mean it. It just really, really improves my confidence every time it happens.
How does it feel to be part of an award-winning show like Euphoria?
It feels like a dream come true. It’s absolutely amazing and I am so incredibly lucky to work with so many talented people. I say it over and over again, but every single person that is a part of that show is extremely talented.
You were recently cast in Eddie Huang’s dark comedy Tuna Melt alongside SZA. Could you share your thoughts and feelings about that?
I love SZA’s music so much! I’ve been a fan of her for a while, she’s really beautiful and I love her style. I’m extremely honoured to be able to star in something with her — I feel very proud of myself to even have that chance. I’m very excited.
Finally, what are you typically listening to on your “urban hikes”?
So, as I said, I’ve been listening to Skrillex. Steve Lacy’s new album has been doing it for me too — it’s so good. I also really like the latest albums by Brockhampton and Kendrick Lamar. Then there are the podcasts… I love Comedy Bang Bang, You’re Wrong About, Bananas, Maintenance Phase, Do You Need A Ride. They’re all really funny.
