Manga fans, assemble! In what is literally the best news ever for anyone who likes fashion and Japanese cartoons, everyone’s fave sparkly shoe brand, Jimmy Choo, is dropping an instantly iconic collaboration with one of the best-loved manga franchises of all time: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon!
Chiming with the 30th anniversary of Naoko Takeuchi’s legendary series – which charts the adventures of wayward schoolgirl turned moon-guardian-goddess Usagi Tsukino and her magical black cat Luna – the collaboration comprises a series of blinged out shoes and accessories that will allow die hard Sailor Moon fans – a clique that notably includes Billie Eilish, Hunter Schafer and Lizzo – to level up their cosplay game. Spanning Sailor Mars scarlet pumps, Sailor Venus crystal-flecked orange satin platforms, a bas paying homage to Luna the magical black cat, and a made-to-order Swarovski-bedecked version of Sailor Moon’s knee-high pink boots, there’s a hell of a lot to get excited about.
More than a simple reproduction of the Sailor Guardians’ go-to looks, however, it’s a celebration of Sailor Moon and Jimmy Choo’s “shared values not just of female empowerment but for fashion’s ability to inspire inclusivity and individuality through personality and self-belief,” says Sandra Choi, Jimmy Choo’s creative director. “The notion of transformation via fashion is central to Naoko Takeuchi, and clothes play a vital role in the identity of her super heroines, especially their shoes, the most powerful transformer you can step into.”
“I am extremely happy that the characters and stories that came from my imagination are now loved by many people around the world. What has always been truly important to me is the youthful, pure imagination and power of the young girls,” Naoko echoes. “I believe that the Jimmy Choo brand also has these qualities. It is a cool brand that I love. Thank you for the beautiful products! I am extremely happy.”
Well, trust us, you shall be too when you get your hands on these goodies! To stand a chance of doing so, make sure to head down to Selfridges for 10am on February 14th, where you’ll find an exclusive pop-up in the department store’s ground floor atrium. As well as being able to discover the collection up close in person, superfans will also be able to hear two exclusive tracks created by Honey Dijon to celebrate the collaboration, and make the most of an abundance of Sailor Moon photo-ops. What’s not to love!
