miley cyrus’ 23 most major looks

Today is Miley Cyrus’ golden birthday — she’s turning 23 on November 23rd! To celebrate, we’ve rounded up 23 of the pop provocateur's most shining standout looks, from her legendary Lil’ Kim Halloween costume to her beach goth Marc Jacobs campaign.

Lighters up: This weekend, Cyrus released a super-trippy technicolor video for her Flaming Lips-collaborative single Lighter — one of the more emotional cuts off her explosive free album Dead Petz. While the video sees the birthday girl in her birthday suit, she is decked out in a kaleidoscopic illustration courtesy of her go-to VMA artist, Jen Stark.

Jumpman, Jumpman: Cyrus teamed up with Mike Will for the ultimate ode to Jordans, and its accompanying schoolhouse video featured the legendary baller’s signature kicks in spades. In addition to rocking a few of MJ’s most iconic models — including the Fire Red Jordan III’s and Wolf Grey V’s — Cyrus also sported remixed versions of Jordan’s Chicago Bulls jerseys.

Supreme and gold sequins for the strip club: Over the summer, we shared exclusive photos from behind the scenes of Mike Will’s star studded video for Drinks on Us. Miley joined Rae Sremmurd, Future, French Montana, and her super producer pal for a night at the strip club, in which she paired a gold sequin dress with a red Supreme jacquard jacket and some serious ice.

Latex twerking uniform: No roundup of Cyrus’ style would be complete without the nude latex look that started it all. Armed with only a foam finger, a scantily clad Cyrus twerked along with Beetlejuice (sorry, Robin Thicke) after she emerged from an enormous teddy bear. The performance was something of a precursor to Cyrus’ Bangerz tour, the 78-show international outing that saw her crowd surf riding a giant hotdog.

Making art with Jeremy Scott: Jeremy and Miley are proper pals, but the designer enlisted his crafty BFF as an accessories collaborator for his trippy hippie spring/summer 15 show. The glue gun crafted creations Cyrus often posts to Instagram came to life on Scott’s NYFW runway, where Cyrus herself chilled in the #frow rocking plastic ice cream cones and Christmas tree car air fresheners.

London Calling in New York: Miley might have been wearing a Marc Jacobs gown to the Met Gala’s punk-themed bash in 2013, but her look was channeling a seriously 70s Vivienne Westwood. Cyrus spiked her short blonde hair and rocked dramatic red lips just as the first lady of Kings Road did during punk’s heyday. Many applauded the classic interpretation as the night’s standout.

Adore You‘s low key punk: Miley had another Westwood moment in her intimate video for sweet Bangerz single Adore You. Sitting in a bathtub, Cyrus played with the scraps of a totally shredded sweater reminiscent of Westwood and Malcolm Mclaren 1976 SEX shop creations (as well as Rodarte’s deconstructed fall/winter 08 knits).

Going gloomy for Marc Jacobs: After taking it all off for Marc Jacobs’ Protect the Skin You’re In benefit t-shirt campaign, Cyrus let the New York designer dress her up in sky high lace collars and dark, dramatic prints. Jacobs’ spring/summer 14 campaign served up serious beach goth vibes and showcased a gloomier side of Cyrus’ hyper-pop style. Shot by David Sims, the campaign also introduced us to Miley’s “dead girl” co-star, Natalie Westling.

Christmas Chanel: Mariah Carey might be the queen of Christmas, but Miley can certainly hang under the mistletoe. For her 2013 Jingle Ball performance, Cyrus channeled both Santa Claus and Chanel-clad legendary stylist Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. Miley’s red sequin two piece sported Chanel buttons on its white fur trim, while she also rocked a pair of Chanel lace-up boots and giant fuzzy bag.

Doing Dolly: Miley’s IRL Grand Ol’ Godmother appeared as her aunt on the Disney show that catapulted her to stardom. Dolly’s tenure on the pre-teen show wasn’t long, but thank god we’re left with the best possible souvenir — a young Miley decked out in Dolly’s go-to get up: animal print pants with a matching bangle, long red acrylics, and a mountain of blonde hair.

Vintage Versace: Before Donatella created one of Miley’s 11 looks at the 2015 VMAs, Cyrus sported vintage threads from the Italian house during her first outing on SNL. During her opening monologue, Cyrus rocked a black and white houndstooth cropped jacket and short skirt straight from the house’s supermodel-stacked ad campaigns.

That girl is Poison: Later on in the program, Cyrus swapped Versace’s greatest hit for a more contemporary look, delivering a heartfelt rendition of Wrecking Ball in a long KTZ jersey dress and enormous crystal chains.

Tupac tees: Miley did another black, white, and vintage moment at the 2013 EMA Awards, where she arrived sporting a pair of thigh-high Tom Ford checker print boots and a lace-up dress depicting the Tupac-Biggie feud.

Rhinestone cowgirl: Unplugged performances often lend themselves to iconic style statements (think Kurt Cobain’s cardigan or Jay-Z’s airbrushed Che Guevara tee), and Miley’s MTV gig was never going to be an exception. The first of two looks Cyrus fittingly described on Instagram as #bobmackiecowgirl was a full body gingham jumpsuit complete with a Western-style rhinestone collar and cowboy hat (a look probably inspired by Aunt Dolly’s attire).

Dream denim: Cyrus continued the Unplugged hoedown in an ensemble that appeared to be the bejeweled offspring of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s 2001 double denim moment.

Lil’ Kim looks: One Halloween, Cyrus tried her hand recreating another legendary awards show look: Lil Kim’s mermaid-inspired moment at the 1999 VMAs. The Bed-Stuy rap legend arrived in a pale purple scalloped jumpsuit, shell sequin pasty (which was later caressed on stage by Diana Ross) and matching wig.

JJ pasties: Speaking of pasties, let’s not forget Cyrus’ alliterative ode to collaborator and pal Joan Jett– a pair of heart shaped pasties adorned with Jett’s initials. Although when actually inducting the iconic Runaways frontwoman into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cyrus took to the stage not in pasties, but a pair of Alexander Wang’s industrial goth boots instead.

All out after party: Speaking of Alexander Wang and pasties, Cyrus sported nothing but pom-pom covered cat eye shades and ice cream shaped pasties at the designer’s spring/summer 15 after party, staged at a pink-tinted Bushwick warehouse.

But he (sort of) covered her up: Both Cyrus and pal Zoe Kravitz wore Wang to this year’s Met Gala. Though Cyrus’ gown featured a high, embellished neck, it also included a few plunging side cut-outs. When asked about the dramatic dips, Cyrus told red carpet reporters she’d decided to go commando.

RIP Hannah Montana: What a better way to kiss your Disney days goodbye than a t-shirt officially announcing your alter ego’s death?

Club kid chic: Another of Miley’s 11 VMA outfits was an inflatable spandex creation that looked as though it was lifted straight from the plastic fantastic Club Kid era. She rocked the “DO IT” dress with a matching bow made out of a plastic pig ears and snout. Perhaps it was an ode to the pig she posed nude with on the cover of Paper, her pet potbelly Bubba Sue.

Miu Miu moments: When it comes to Miley and Miuccia, it’s a perfectly pastel love affair. The singer sported two Miu Miu coats in her 2014 cover shoot for Love Magazine (one was baby blue, the other the same shade of Lil Kim lilac). Miley again donned a full Miu Miu look for a Fallon appearance earlier this year– but this time, a matching yellow blouse and patent croc skirt from the brand’s fall/winter 15 collection (which she topped off with a pair of lace bunny ears, duh).

Bleached eyebrows and black Balmain: Miley teamed up with Mert, Marcus, and Edward Enninful for a stripped-back W Magazine cover profile in 2014. Pumping up the peroxide and completely bleaching her eyebrows, Miley donned a black, quilted Balmain jumpsuit and revealed a tough girl side to her hyper-hippie style.
