Diplo really, really wants to work with Rihanna. The only problem is, she’s not too keen.
In a recent interview with GQ Style , the Major Lazer producer shared his many (many) unsuccessful attempts to court RiRi, sharing how the singer repeatedly turned down his offers to appear on songs such as megahit Lean On.
“I played her Lean On. She was like, ‘I don’t do house music.’ I face-palmed so hard on that one,” Diplo said. “Another time I had a session with her, and Future was also invited. The Weeknd was there. Metro Boomin was there before anybody knew who he was. I was so contact high. Future played her, like, 700 songs. It was four in the morning. Finally, I was like, ‘Yo, G, I’m leaving unless you let me play her a song.'”
Even in this illustrious studio environment, Rihanna was resistant. “I played her a song. And she was like, ‘This sounds like a reggae song at an airport.’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna go kill myself, ‘” he said.
After Diplo’s histrionics hit the news cycle, RiRi shared an Instagram post in which she (sort of) apologised to the producer…#DutyFree.
In fact, Rihanna remains totally unbothered, especially after her she absolutely killed her annual appearance at this year’s Crop Over festival in Barbados.
The singer’s bejewelled outfit and electric blue hair set the Internet alight after she deigned to share the incredible look with us mere mortals.
We are truly not worthy.
Meanwhile, Diplo is still holding out hope that Ri will jump on a Major Lazer song. “I think before we’re all done, she’ll be on a song of ours. Hopefully,” he said. “But if not, I don’t really care.”
Sure…
